An Angry Rant.   Leave a comment

This is a short message to the person who hurt my cat.

Firstly, I’m not a cat lover myself, I can understand your annoyance over dug up gardens and pulled up flowers.  I’m the one shooing cats away after being awoken at night to howls outside because of a cat fight.  However, let me tell you a little about the cat you hurt.

I can only tell you a little because I have very few details myself.  His name is Batman and his sister is called poppet.  I know that he came to us after being beaten by his old family for 3 years  –  a man we believe.  We know something very bad happened to him with either dustbin / carrier bags because he runs if he hears that noise.  I know that they were both homeless for days when the family fled.  I know that he protects his sister who appears sometimes to have cotton wool as a brain.

We have had batman and poppet for 6 months and I know that it took him weeks to let us near him.  He continues now to run if there is a loud noise, if my partner wears a hat or if either of us move to fast.  He waits to be invited onto the furniture , but never stays long, never touches us, walks over us or on any of our belongings.  i know that he has personal space issues, probably because having people too close meant he got hurt.

It has taken him months to be brave enough to rub up against us when we are preparing his food, and even then he walks away and keeps his distance.  Watching him over time I have noticed that he is always on guard, always near an exit and always ready to run.

I agree that he walks around with a chip on his shoulder,  like he has an argument to settle,  but this is what he has had to do for most of his life.  For him and his sister.

However, now I don’t see a cat, I see an extension to my family.  I also see him run when we look at him, cower away if we put our hands down to touch him and hide if we happen to be walking past.  After 6 months he is not asking for his food, he is not spending time in the same room as us.  Equally so he is not leaving the house.  He is acting as you or I would if we were attacked or mugged, which tells me he is hurt and frightened.

You used force on a creature not only smaller and weaker than you, but one who already has little faith in humans.   Please remember, you didn’t just hurt my cat, but you hurt a vulnerable member of my family, when a clap of your hands would have been sufficient.

My cat is in pain and distressed and I can do nothing to calm him.  I hope your flowers were worth it.
